Each infant stricken with SMA, Type I is different. We have included this only for your information. All medical decisions should be made in conjunction with your doctor. BOTTLE FEEDING
"STANDARD BOTTLE FEEDING" There are literally hundreds of bottles and nipples available today. Your baby's ability to suck, swallow, and coordinate eating will determine what type of nipple will be best. Trial and error works but you may also benefit from the help of a Speech-Language Pathologist who specializes in infant feeding and swallowing. We found that Wyatt preferred a standard straight latex nipple. It is a bit harder than the silicone and provided more resistance to his sucking, allowing him more control over the flow of the milk from the nipple. "HABERMAN NIPPLE" If your baby is having trouble bottle feeding due to a weak suck you may consider using a Haberman nipple. This specially designed nipple allows you to control the flow of liquid into the mouth, essentially bypassing the suck. Ask your Speech-Language Pathologist if this nipple system is appropriate for your child. |
